MARATHON LAKE
The Marathon Lake is an artificial lake that works as a water supply reservoir for the City of Athens, formed from the construction of Marathon Dam at the junction of Charadros River and the town of Varnavas. At the time of its construction, the Marathon Dam was a major symbol of modernization for Greece.
MARATHON TOMB
Tomb of Marathon or Soros, the mound where the graves of the 192 Athenian Marathon Warriors are, where the remains of the cremation of the dead were buried. The battle of Marathon the greatest battle of all times against the expansionism of the Persians, a defining moment in the history of the West.
ARCHEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF MARATHON
It houses finds from the Battle of Marathon but also other kinds from the wider area, as well as from the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods of Brexiza, the ruins of which are located on the shores of Nea Makri. The museum also includes the sheltered mound cemetery of the Middle Bronze Age (2000-1600 BC) and the so-called Plataean mound of the battle of Marathon.
MARATHON RUN MUSEUM
A permanent exhibition of Olympic Marathons presents to the public the history of the Olympic Marathon race starting from 1896, a journey through the history of Olympic marathons through the collection of rare objects and a record of the global road marathon movement.
TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS IN BRAURON
One of the most iconic pieces of heritage in Attica is the sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron, remains of which are there today. In antiquity young Athenian women celebrated the brauronia in this temple, a feminine initiation ritual that took place during the Brauronian festivals which were held in honour of the goddess Artemis.
